Subpixel Inspection

High-contrast alternating 1px vertical subpixel stripes designed to inspect panel physical subpixel arrangement (standard RGB vs BGR) and font anti-aliasing behavior.

Technical Scope & Limitations

Visual inspection only. Browser APIs cannot directly probe physical liquid crystal subpixel geometry.

Browser rendering output can be influenced by OS display scaling, GPU driver color settings, and active HDR profiles.

Testing Instructions
  1. Enter fullscreen mode and view the display closely or with a magnifier.
  2. Observe the red, green, and blue vertical stripe patterns.
  3. Standard desktop panels use RGB striping; certain laptop or TV panels use BGR which may cause colored text fringing under standard ClearType/subpixel antialiasing.

Standard RGB Striping

Over 90% of desktop PC monitors use a standard Red-Green-Blue horizontal sequence. Windows ClearType and macOS font smoothing are pre-tuned for RGB ordering.

BGR Striping Layout

Certain TV panels and specialty laptop displays use a reversed Blue-Green-Red subpixel order. This can cause visible colored fringing on black text unless OS subpixel font rendering is explicitly flipped.

BGR Panels and ClearType Blur

Windows ClearType assumes an RGB layout by default. If your monitor uses a BGR panel, text will appear slightly blurred. Run the Windows ClearType Tuner wizard to select the BGR subpixel profile.

Why do manufacturers use BGR panels?

Some monitor panels are mounted inverted to optimize circuit board traces, refresh rate timing, or cost. This flips the physical subpixel sequence from RGB to BGR.
