Mixed Contrast Test
Tests display handling of complex real-world frames containing both high-nit highlights and deep shadows. Ideal for OLED, Mini-LED, VA LCD, and HDR-capable displays.
Technical Scope & Limitations
Visual audit tool. User observes whether bright regions compromise adjacent dark regions.
Browser rendering output can be influenced by OS display scaling, GPU driver color settings, and active HDR profiles.
Testing Instructions
- Observe all four zones of the pattern simultaneously: bright white block, mid-gray block, deep black surround, and pinpoint stars.
- Check if the large white area causes the nearby black area to glow or lift.
- Check if the pinpoint stars retain their brightness without being crushed.

What This Test Checks
- Simultaneous retention of high-luminance blocks and deep shadow detail.
- Backlight zone light spill into adjacent mid-gray and black sections.
- Auto Brightness Limiter (ABL) throttling on emissive screens.
How to Perform the Test
- Enter fullscreen mode in a dark viewing room.
- Observe all four zones of the pattern simultaneously: bright white block, mid-gray block, deep black surround, and pinpoint stars.
- Check if the large white area causes the nearby black area to glow or lift.
What to Look For
- Deep black regions should remain pitch black, and small pinpoint stars should retain their crisp brightness without being dimmed.
Common Display Problems & Diagnostic Guidance
Contrast Washing in Mixed Scenes
Displays with weak local dimming or low native contrast will wash out dark regions whenever high-nit elements occupy more than 20% of the screen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which display technologies perform best in mixed contrast?
OLED and QD-OLED excel at mixed contrast because every individual subpixel operates independently. High-zone Mini-LED displays also achieve strong results, while standard edge-lit LCDs exhibit noticeable gray glow.
