Inversion / Pixel Flicker Pattern

LCD panels reverse electrical voltage polarity on every frame to prevent liquid crystal polarization damage. If voltage balancing is imperfect, certain alternating pixel patterns will visibly shimmer or flicker.

Technical Scope & Limitations

Checks panel voltage inversion balance visually. Does NOT measure PWM backlight dimming frequency.

Hardware Note: Voltage inversion balancing is configured during monitor panel assembly.

Browser rendering output can be influenced by OS display scaling, GPU driver color settings, and active HDR profiles.

Testing Instructions
  1. Warning: These patterns may appear to shimmer or cause mild visual discomfort.
  2. Enter fullscreen mode.
  3. Closely examine the fine alternating checkerboard and line patterns.
  4. The patterns should look static. Visible crawling, flickering, or vertical banding reveals sub-optimal inversion calibration.

How to Perform the Test

  • Enter fullscreen mode.
  • Observe the 1px checkerboard, horizontal, and vertical line patterns.
  • The patterns should look steady and solid. If the pattern crawls or visibly flickers, inversion is unbalanced.

What to Look For

  • A properly calibrated panel shows a completely stationary pattern.
  • Uneven polarity causes visible crawling lines, vertical banding, or pixel vibration.

Constant DC voltage applied to liquid crystals causes permanent burn-in. LCD controllers constantly alternate electrical polarity on every refresh frame to balance charge.

Does this test measure monitor PWM flicker?

No. This test inspects liquid crystal voltage inversion, not backlight Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) dimming. For PWM, high-speed camera inspection is required.
